This page is dedicated to all who are serving or who have served our country in Iraq or Afghanistan and to those who have given their lives in the current wars. Hopefully through Remembrance their service will not be forgotten.

Team Captain – Merilee Bowers

My team will be walking in honor of Keryn Costa who is serving in the Air National Guard and has recently been deployed to Afghanistan. Let me tell you a little bit about Keryn. She is a kind sweet young woman who is quick to smile and has the most beautiful eyes and heart. I was fortunate to have her as a student when she took my ceramic class. She was such a force – and not easily forgotten. You just knew when Keryn was in the room – she was seldom quiet and had an infectious laugh – it was really hard to get mad at her even when she was doing her history homework in class instead of getting on a potters’ wheel. One day as I was watering and talking to my plants I noticed Keryn hanging out with a friend – I think she may have been eating a bagel and coffee – well I spoke sharply to her and said something like “Keryn you need to get to work now! This is not the cafeteria, it’s a ceramic class!” Well her response was classic and stopped me in my tracks – “Bowers!  You treat your plants nicer than you treat me! I don’t hear you yelling at them!” – Well we still talk and laugh about that day. And that is why whenever I see or talk with her I call her “my little plant”. I love you Keryn – Thank you for your service. Stay safe little plant. I’ll see you when you get back.

Dear Merilee I would like to be Team Captain for my daddy, John Wayne Marcum. We will be walking in Memory of him.

My name is Madison Marcum and I am ten years old. John Wayne Marcum was a Navy SEAL from DEVGRU who was killed in action on September 11 2008 in Bagram, Afghanistan. I am walking in memory of John Wayne Marcum because he is my daddy. I know that he is always watching over me and looking after me and I love him very much. Please join me in my efforts to raise money for Remembrance Memorial and showing these brave men and woman who gave the ultimate sacrifice that they will never be forgotten....especially my daddy
.

Oliveira died from injuries received from enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. He died on October, 2004.

He left behind his wife and his newborn son Nathan, who ironically was born on Sept. 11, 2004. Nathan was one month old when his dad was killed.

We will also be walking for those who continue to serve, including my Nephew Peter A. Cambra, who is currently serving in the USAF.

Thanks,

Anne
